Water Pump Replacement

Protecting your engine from overheating by keeping coolant circulating reliably.

Recommended interval

Often replaced alongside the timing belt (every 90,000–120,000km), or sooner if failing

Typical turnaround

Typically 2–4 hours, depending on engine layout

Warranty

6 months / 6,000km on all work

What it is

What is Water Pump Replacement?

The water pump circulates coolant through your engine and radiator, and it's typically driven by the timing belt or a dedicated drive belt. Unlike many components, water pumps tend to fail without much warning, often through a bearing failure or a seal starting to leak, which is why we inspect them proactively rather than waiting for a failure.

On engines where the water pump is driven by the timing belt, we generally recommend replacing it at the same time as the belt, since the labour to access it is largely the same and it prevents a second, avoidable labour cost later.

Why it matters

Why this matters for your car

A failed water pump stops coolant circulation almost immediately, which can allow engine temperature to spike within minutes of failure, often with very little warning beforehand. Because of this, water pump failure is one of the more common causes of an unexpected roadside overheating incident.

Replacing a water pump proactively, particularly alongside a timing belt service, is significantly cheaper than replacing one after it fails and causes overheating damage.

The real cost of waiting

What happens if you ignore this?

This isn't scare-mongering — it's what we see time and again when this exact issue is left unaddressed.

Sudden loss of coolant circulation

A failed water pump can stop coolant flow abruptly, causing engine temperature to rise quickly.

Roadside breakdown

Water pump failure often happens with little warning, making it a common cause of unexpected overheating breakdowns.

Timing belt damage

On some engines, a failing water pump bearing can damage the timing belt it shares a drive with, risking further engine damage.

Know the signs

Signs you need this now

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth booking an inspection before the issue progresses.

Coolant leaking from the front-centre of the engine, near the pump housing

A high-pitched whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine

Engine temperature gauge fluctuating or climbing unexpectedly

Steam from under the bonnet, particularly at idle

How we work

Our process

Every job follows the same disciplined sequence — diagnose first, explain clearly, then fix it right.

01

Leak & bearing inspection

We check for coolant leaks at the pump housing and test the pump bearing for play or noise.

02

Belt & timing assessment

Where relevant, we assess whether the water pump should be replaced alongside the timing belt.

03

Pump replacement

The water pump is replaced and the cooling system refilled with the correct coolant.

04

System bleed & pressure test

The system is bled of air and pressure tested to confirm proper circulation and no leaks.
